Advantages and disadvantages of oxyfuel cutting
15/03/2020, 12:00

Oxygen-fuel systems installed on cnc tables are usually used for cutting steel above 15-20mm and have several advantages that still support the use of this method:
- are inexpensive
- they can be prepared for work very quickly and it is possible to obtain high edge steepness at high material thicknesses.
- Low power consumption - unlike other cutting methods with significant steel thicknesses up to several hundred millimeters
- oxygen and propane are very popular and generally available
Disadvantages of oxyfuel cutting:
- This process is actually used only for cutting mild steel.
- long warm-up time before breakthrough
- sensitivity to dirt and corrosion
- requires knowledge from the operator
- after cutting out, the parts are very oxidized and require cleaning
Despite many disadvantages of this method, a highly skilled operator can get very good cutting quality.
In workshops that produce a lot of parts, oxy-fuel systems often work with automatic machines, cutting relatively small parts, often using multiple torches on one portal. When multiple burners are used, the process offers higher productivity with thicker materials.
